Berdasarkan sejarahnya, Tari Bondan dulunya merupakan tarian wajib bagi para kembang desa di kerajaan Mataram Lama. Tarian ini dimainkan untuk mengambarkan jati diri sebagai seorang yang meski cantik, tapi tetap mempunyai jiwa keibuan.

Pada perkembangannya, tari bondan lalu terbagi menjadi 3 varian berbeda menurut penggunaannya, yaitu Tari Bondan Cindogo, Tari Bondan Mardisiwi, dan Tari Bondan Tani.
